Notice Periods And Resigning Properly In Bahrain

Most problems when leaving a Bahraini employer are procedural rather than legal: a verbal resignation nobody recorded, a notice period counted from the wrong date, or a new employer expecting a start date the old contract does not allow.

Resign in writing, always

• State your last working day, calculated from the date the letter is received, not the date you decided.
• Ask for written acknowledgement with that date on it.
• Keep it short and neutral. A resignation letter is a record, not a place to raise grievances.
• Confirm separately, in writing, how unused leave and end-of-service will be settled.

What to agree with the new employer

Tell the new employer your real notice period before you accept, not after. Bahraini employers hire quickly and often expect an immediate start; a candidate who promises one week and then needs a month damages both relationships. If the new employer wants an earlier start, ask whether the current employer will accept a shortened notice in writing — this is often agreed, but it must be documented.

• Signing a clearance form that waives claims before seeing the settlement figures.
• Handing over your passport or documents to settle a dispute — legitimate employers do not require this.
• Leaving Bahrain with an unpaid settlement outstanding.
