Leave entitlement is one of the few parts of a Bahrain contract that is easy to check before you sign, and one of the most commonly misunderstood after. This guide explains how it works in practice and what to keep evidence of.
How annual leave works
- Paid annual leave accrues with service and is earned in proportion to the months you have worked.
- Leave is normally taken on dates agreed with the employer, who may schedule it around operational needs.
- Leave is paid at your normal wage — not at basic salary only, unless your contract genuinely defines pay that way.
- Days you have earned but not taken are payable when you leave the job.
Sick leave and other leave
Sick leave is separate from annual leave and requires a medical certificate from an approved source. Maternity leave, marriage and bereavement leave, and pilgrimage leave exist under the Labour Law with their own conditions. Do not allow sick days to be silently deducted from your annual leave balance — check the payslip.
Public holidays
Bahrain observes public holidays including New Year, Labour Day, Eid Al Fitr, Eid Al Adha, Hijri New Year, Ashura, the Prophet's Birthday and National Day. Islamic holiday dates move each year and are confirmed officially close to the date. Working on a public holiday is treated as exceptional and paid more favourably.
Before you resign
- Ask HR in writing for your current leave balance in days.
- Check whether unpaid or 'emergency' days were recorded against annual leave.
- Confirm that outstanding leave will be included in the final settlement alongside gratuity.
