End-Of-Service Gratuity In Bahrain: What You Are Owed When You Leave

In Bahrain, an employee who completes continuous service is entitled to an end-of-service payment calculated on length of service and wage, paid on top of any unused leave — the exact entitlement depends on your contract type, your service length and the law in force when you leave, so confirm the calculation in writing before you resign.

End-of-service gratuity is the single largest payment most expatriate employees in Bahrain receive, and the one most often misunderstood — usually because the employee assumed a rate, the employer used a different wage base, and nobody wrote anything down until the last week.

What the entitlement is built from

  • Continuous service — the total unbroken period with the same employer, including probation once it is completed.
  • The wage used in the calculation — normally the basic wage, not the total package. Allowances are only included if your contract says so.
  • How the employment ended — resignation, non-renewal, and dismissal for a lawful cause are treated differently.
  • Unused annual leave, which is settled separately and is not part of the gratuity itself.
  • Social insurance contributions, which changed in recent years for some categories of worker; your entitlement may sit partly with the insurance scheme rather than the employer.

Before you resign

  1. 1Get your service dates confirmed in writing

Ask HR to confirm your start date and any breaks in service. Disagreements about a few weeks of service are common where an employee transferred between related companies.

  2. 2Ask which wage the calculation uses

Request the figure in writing — basic wage, or basic plus named allowances. This single line accounts for most disputes.

  3. 3Ask for a written settlement statement

It should list gratuity, unused leave, any notice pay, and deductions, with the dates each is based on. Do not sign a clearance form that waives claims before you have read the numbers.

  4. 4Keep copies of everything

Contract, offer letter, payslips for the last twelve months, and any allowance letters. If a dispute reaches the labour authority, these are what decide it.

If the employer disputes it

Bahrain has a formal labour dispute process, and employees can raise a complaint with the Ministry of Labour before going to court. Do not resign in anger, leave the country, or hand back your documents while a payment is unresolved — leverage disappears the moment you do.

This guide describes how the entitlement is normally structured, not legal advice on your case. Rates and rules change, so check the current position with the Ministry of Labour or a Bahraini lawyer before relying on a figure.

Common questions

Is gratuity calculated on basic pay or total salary in Bahrain?

Normally on the basic wage, unless your contract expressly includes named allowances. Ask the employer to state which figure they are using, in writing, before you resign.

Do I lose my gratuity if I resign?

Resigning does not automatically remove the entitlement, but how and when you leave can affect the amount. Serve your notice properly and get the settlement in writing.

Does probation count towards service?

Once probation is successfully completed, that period normally forms part of continuous service. Confirm your recorded start date with HR.

What if my employer refuses to pay?

Raise a complaint with the Ministry of Labour. Keep your contract, payslips and any written settlement statement — those documents decide the outcome.
