Job Description
The job scope for this position is with Vision Elevators, a full-service provider of rack-and-pinion elevator equipment, including industrial elevators, stocking a full range of replacement parts and offering service and maintenance contracts. Its full-service operation includes engineering services, field management, installation and immediate service for permanent elevators. This highly skilled Elevator Technician position focuses on service, maintenance and repair work to ensure the integrity and proper maintenance of rack-and-pinion elevator equipment and systems. The technician is responsible for performing complex electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, callbacks and repair tasks. The job responsibilities include conducting technical inspections and repairs to ensure conformity with maintenance standards and recommending adjustments as necessary to preserve equipment integrity or respond to changing operating conditions; carrying out thorough hands-on investigations into equipment or system failures and problematic installations; analyzing the effectiveness of preventive maintenance practices and suggesting improvements; ensuring that the technical requirements for redesigned equipment are properly documented; coordinating with supervisors and providing field training for journeyman technicians; working with engineering staff to analyze mechanical systems, electronic circuits and peripherals used in elevator systems and determine parts compatibility; evaluating circuit adaptability under various operating conditions and evaluating electronic circuitry; assisting certified inspectors during periodic field inspections of installed equipment to ensure that it operates efficiently and according to predetermined specifications; assisting engineering staff with field testing proposed procedures, maintenance troubleshooting manuals and inspection schedules for all equipment, and suggesting technically defined maintenance improvements to support reliability objectives; providing effective technical assistance to and coordinating with training personnel in developing instructional programs to ensure that the required skill levels are available to maintain elevator and escalator systems; preparing timely reports, as required, on general system or equipment problems, replacement parts and equipment performance standards; complying with established rules and regulations; maintaining a clean work area; and acting as a mentor. The position requires extensive knowledge of and the ability to identify and correct complex rack-and-pinion elevator problems, with the ability to complete tasks independently, quickly and accurately and explain and demonstrate proper procedures to customer personnel. The technician must be able to troubleshoot to component level and make the necessary adjustments and repairs to all elevator equipment; maintain an understanding of current elevator codes, local jurisdictional codes, trends, policies, procedures and techniques of the elevator trade; apply extensive administrative and technical maintenance principles and practices for rack-and-pinion elevators; plan and lay out the installation, modification and repair of various complex elevator systems and equipment and properly test completed installations with little or no supervision; maintain state-of-the-art technology equipment; provide leadership, instruction and work review for lower-level technicians; communicate effectively; deal courteously with customers, coworkers, contractors and the general public; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, technical staff and other employees. The qualifications require a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 10 years of practical experience, along with knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles as they apply to rack-and-pinion elevators and similar controls and a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. The technician must be able to identify stages of construction when possible violations and defects may most easily be observed and corrected and must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. The physical demands include regularly talking or hearing, standing, walking, sitting, using the hands to handle or feel, reaching with the hands and arms, and working at heights above 20 feet, as well as occasionally lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
